St. Anthony of Padua

1450s
Panel
Basilica of Santa Maria in Aracoeli, Rome

St. Anthony of Padua is pictured in a gray Franciscan habit with the typical rope belt with three knots in the part that hangs down. The now familiar iconography by which the Christ Child appears to the saint had not yet taken root when this panel was painted. Instead, we see him with a flaming heart. The inscription identifies the saint as sanctus antonius ulixbonensis, "St. Anthony of Lisbon." He was born in Lisbon but died in Padua.

The figures at the bottom are the donors.
